Founder's Note
“Vineyards are intentionally being set on fire!”
If you’ve spent any time along California’s Central Coast recently, you may have noticed a changing landscape…
An abnormally high number of vineyards are being pulled and set ablaze.
While it's normal to remove vineyards at the end of their life cycle (approximately 20 to 30 years). It's a sign of an industry in peril when you see perfectly healthy vineyards being pulled out of production.
It’s a visible reminder that wine, like all great agricultural traditions, moves in cycles.
A Moment of Transition
Today, consumption trends—supply and demand—are shifting.
Consumers have more choices than ever. Just walk down your local wine and beer aisle, and you'll see wine (bottled, canned, boxed, tetra packs), beer (domestic, craft, bottled, canned), seltzers (vodka based, wine based), ready-to-drink cocktails (margaritas, moscow mules, white russians, etc) … and that's just the beginning of it. And don’t get me started on cannabis and people being addicted to their cell phones.
All of these options pull demand away from wine. As a result, the industry has the largest over-supply in recent history.
And yet, through every chapter of history, wine has endured.
From ancient civilizations to the founding of our country, wine has long been a symbol of celebration, community, and craftsmanship. That doesn’t disappear with a single market shift. It never has.
Standing Strong and Growing
I’ve spent a lot of time in vineyards over the years, and I can tell you that this isn’t the first cycle our industry has faced, and it won’t be the last.
What matters is how you respond.
At Republican Red Winery, we made a decision early on that we’re not here to follow trends. We’re here to stand for something.
We believe in American craftsmanship, in doing things the right way, and in creating wines people are proud to bring to the table.
Even now, as parts of the industry pull back, we’re leaning in by staying true to our values.
While the overall category works through this transition, Republican Red Winery continues to grow and thrive.
That’s no accident.
It’s a testament to:
-
The loyalty of our customers
-
The strength of our brand
-
And the uncompromising quality of our wines
We’re not chasing volume.
We’re building something that lasts… slow and steady.
Why “American-Made” Matters More Than Ever
There’s another part of this story that many consumers don’t realize:
Some wineries with “American”on their labels use up to 25% imported wine in their bottles and others saying “California” and even “Napa” may have up to 15% from an area other than what is disclosed on the label.
While some wine drinkers unknowingly consume the partly imported wines, American grape growers are going out of business.
This matters, because when you choose a truly Cabernet Sauvignon
American-made wine, crafted from American grown grapes, you are not just buying a bottle, you’re supporting:
-
American farmers
-
American land
-
American craftsmanship
It’s something we believe in deeply and will never compromise.
Looking Ahead
Wine has survived empires, revolutions, and generations of change.
It will outlast this moment, too.
Because wine isn’t just a product, it’s an experience. A tradition. A connection to something bigger.
Raise a glass to what lies ahead. And here at Republican Red Winery, we’re proud to be part of that enduring story.
Cheers! 🇺🇸🍷
