Is Your “American” Wine Actually From America? The Truth Behind the Label

Fellow Patriots,

Have you ever picked up a bottle of wine from an “American” region (such as Napa, California, etc) and felt a surge of pride, knowing you’re supporting our hardworking farmers and the local economy? You’d assume that "American" means exactly what it says: grown, harvested, and bottled right here on our soil.

Unfortunately, for many big wine conglomerates, "American" is more of a suggestion than a standard.

The 25% Loophole: Why Your Wine Might Be a World Traveler

Under current federal regulations, wineries can blend up to 25% imported bulk wine into a bottle and still legally label it as "American." This means that while you think you’re sipping the spirit of the U.S.A., a quarter of your glass could actually be cheap juice sourced from Chile, Australia, or even China.

This isn’t just a matter of "labeling technicalities"—it’s a direct threat to the American dream.

  • Hurting Our Farmers: While big corporations import cheap foreign juice to pad their bottom lines, American grape growers are suffering. In 2024 alone, an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 tons of California grapes were left to rot on the vine because they couldn't compete with the flood of low-cost imports.

  • Misleading Consumers: You deserve transparency. Most folks don’t realize that "American" wine doesn't mean 100% American grapes, leading to what many industry experts call "consumer deception."

  • Killing American Jobs: This loophole erodes the stability of our agricultural communities, forcing multi-generational family farms to close their doors for good.

Republican Red: Made in America from Grape to Glass

At Republican Red Winery, we don't believe in cutting corners or hiding behind deceptive labels. We are proud to be a patriot-owned, small family business that stands for grit, quality, and the American worker.

When we say we are American-made, we mean it:

  • 100% Central California Grapes: Every drop of our wine is grown right here in the USA.

  • American-Made Packaging: We go the extra mile. Everything in our bottle—the grapes, the glass, even the box—is made from American-made products.

We don't just talk the talk; we walk the walk by ensuring our supply chain is transparent and entirely domestic. We believe in a standard that honors the red, white, and blue.

It’s time to stop the "Grapes of Wrath" and return to the "Grapes of Glory." Here is how you can help:

  1. Support Truth in Labeling: Write a letter to your representative in support of AB 1585. This essential legislation would require wine labeled "American" to be made from 100% American-grown grapes, finally closing the loophole that rewards big corporations for offshoring our farms.

  2. Vote with Your Wallet: Support the families who keep the American dream alive. Buy your wine from a winery that respects the Constitution, the rule of law, and the American farmer.
